Titan Golf: Recent Successes and What’s Next for CSUF’s Teams
It’s been an exciting season for Titan Golf. Both the men’s and women’s programs at Cal State Fullerton have been making headlines lately. The women’s team recently turned in some historic performances, and the men’s team is building momentum in the Big West. For a program that’s flown under the radar, these recent successes are starting to change the conversation.
These wins are a testament to the hard work of student-athletes, smart recruiting, and a growing sense of confidence across the program. Titan Golf is clearly on the rise, and supporters have plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future.
CSUF women’s golf program a success
The 2024-25 season was a turning point for the Cal State Fullerton women’s golf team. What had long been a promising program officially broke through this year with a series of firsts, including the team’s first conference title, first NCAA regional appearance, and first trip to the NCAA Women’s Finals in Carlsbad, California.
First-ever Big West championship
In April 2025, the Titan women claimed their first-ever Big West Conference championship in a dominant wire-to-wire performance that concluded with an impressive 14-stroke victory.
Anchoring the team was junior Kaitlyn Zermeno Smith, who earned the individual medalist title with a three-day total of 3-under par. Her standout 7-under 65 in round 2 tied a program record and helped CSUF secure its automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Breakthrough NCAA post-season performance
Seeded 10th in the NCAA Gold Canyon Regional in Arizona, Fullerton entered as an underdog. But the team delivered under pressure, finishing fifth and earning a spot in the NCAA National Championship for the first time. It was a gritty, confident performance that defied expectations and demonstrated the program’s remarkable progress.
At the nationals in Carlsbad, the Titans held their own against some of the best teams in the country. They ended up finishing tied for 28th, ahead of established programs like Baylor and UNLV.
Standout individual efforts
Much of the team’s success came from individual players stepping up in clutch moments.
Kaitlyn Zermeno Smith continued her standout season by tying for 63rd at the NCAA Championships and shooting 1-under on par-5s, showing she could compete at the national level. The junior also earned the league’s highest honor, as she was named Golfer of the Year for the 2024-2025 season.
Sophomore Katharina Zeilinger, junior Davina Xanh (runner-up at Big West), Zara Ali (10th at Big West), and senior Louise Dahl (6th at Big West and freshman Jordyn Janert, all played key roles throughout the post-season. With several players returning next season, the women’s team is well-positioned to build on this breakthrough year.
Men’s golf program highlights
While the women’s team was making headlines with its historic run, the CSUF men’s golf team was quietly building momentum of its own. With a strong showing in the Big West Championship and consistent performances throughout the season, the men’s program demonstrated that it’s on the cusp of a breakout year. The team showed its depth, maturity, and potential for future success this season.
Big West Championship runner-up
In April, the Titans earned a strong second-place finish at the 2025 Big West Championship at La Quinta Country Club, finishing just behind Long Beach State University. CSUF posted a total of 17-under-par 847, which was highlighted by five eagles and 49 birdies.
Tegan Andrews, Will Tanaka, and Giacomo Comerio were named to the All-Tournament Team after tying for fifth at 5-under-par 211. Matthew Schafer tied for 13th at 2-under 214, marking the deepest conference placement for the Titans in several years.
Season summary and outlook
Fullerton’s men’s team showed consistent top 10 potential throughout the spring. The team captured a tournament win at the Orange County Collegiate Classic, notched a fifth place finish at the Grand Canyon Invitational, and recorded four additional top-10 finishes.
Tegan Andrews anchored the campaign, earning Big West First Team All-Conference honors for the second straight year. He averaged 70.5 strokes, secured a season-low 66, and led the Titans in nine of 11 events. Andrews also clinched the individual NCAA Regional qualifying spot, teeing up for the Reno Regional in May as a seeded player.
Other noteworthy performances came from sophomores Will Tanaka and Giacomo Comerio, who both earned All-Conference recognition. The supporting roster also had solid showings at tournaments like the Wyoming Cowboy Classic and the El Macero Classic.
Together, these elements offer reason for optimism. The program’s strong leadership, recruiting success, and growing donor support all put CSUF in a good position to aim for a conference championship and an NCAA Regional berth next season.
CSUF supports its golf program
The success of Titan Golf can be attributed to strong university support. Both teams benefit from shared access to CSUF’s strength and conditioning center, academic services, and sports medicine facilities. Collaboration between the men’s and women’s programs can help both teams to find shared success, with coaches and athletes pushing each other to improve.
This momentum is catching the attention of both recruits and donors, with increased visibility and recent wins helping to attract new talent and philanthropic support. Titan Golf’s foundation is strong, and it’s only getting better.
